Misuya Needle

A mysterious space suddenly appears on Sanjo Street in Kyoto.

A small, dimly lit alley stretches from the road between the stores.

If you follow that path...

A trendy building. A cafe? No, it was a needle store.

The sign said, "No more than two people allowed.

Inside the counter of the small store are needles, needles, needles, and a little thread.

This is the only store in Japan that specializes in Japanese sewing needles.

“I've only been sewing kimono collar for a few months now.”

“If you're looking for a collar-sewing needles, this one is for you. The thickness is the same and the length is 1cm different.

Different people have different sewing habits and hand sizes, so it's up to you.”

After such a conversation, the owner laid out the recommended needles.

Misuya's needles are characterized by a unique heat treatment that makes the tip harder, the area around the needle hole softer, and the body more elastic. The body of the needle is heat-treated to make it resilient, so that it is elastic and meets the requirement of the best needles, which is to bend and break momentarily when bent. In addition, the tips of the needles are slightly rounded to prevent them from being too sharp and damaging the threads of the cloth, and the copper part of the needle has very fine vertical stripes to improve the passage of the cloth.

It was a strange space, with customers coming from far away to get needles here.

He gave me a pamphlet as a souvenir.

According to the pamphlet, Misuya Hari started dealing with needles for the court in the mid-17th century during the Edo period, and was given the trade name "Misuya" by the emperor in 1655. It is one of the oldest shops in Kyoto with a history of 400 years.

Sanjo, where Misuya's store is located, is just at the end and beginning of the Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido Highway, and Misuya's needles have become known throughout the country as good quality Kyoto souvenirs that don't weigh a fortune.

If you are a hand-sewer, please visit Misuya.
